Delhi is much more than a city of famous monuments. It is a place where centuries of history, colourful markets, incredible food, religious traditions and modern India come together. From the narrow lanes of Old Delhi to the grand avenues of New Delhi, every neighbourhood has a different story to tell.
Having spent many years guiding travellers through Delhi, I believe the best way to experience the city is not simply to tick monuments off a list. It is to slow down, explore the local neighbourhoods, taste the food, meet people and experience the Delhi that exists beyond the usual tourist trail. Here are 10 of the best things to do in Delhi, based on what I recommend to travellers visiting the city.
1. Explore the Red Fort and Old Delhi
Start your Delhi experience in Old Delhi, one of the most fascinating parts of the city. The magnificent Red Fort was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and once served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors. But the real experience begins when you step outside the fort and enter the lively streets of Old Delhi.
Take a walk through the historic lanes around Chandni Chowk and you'll find centuries-old shops, colourful markets, temples, mosques and some of Delhi's most famous street food. Don't try to see everything in a hurry. Old Delhi is best experienced slowly.
2. Take a Food Walk in Old Delhi
If you love food, don't leave Delhi without exploring its street-food culture. Old Delhi is famous for dishes such as parathas, kebabs, chaat, jalebi and other traditional Indian sweets and snacks.
Many of the shops and food businesses have been operating for generations, and their stories are part of Delhi's culinary heritage. A good local guide can help you discover small food stalls and family-run establishments that you might otherwise walk straight past.
3. Visit Humayun's Tomb
Often described as a precursor to the Taj Mahal, Humayun's Tomb is one of Delhi's most beautiful Mughal monuments. The symmetrical gardens, red sandstone architecture and white marble details make it particularly impressive. It is also an excellent place to understand the evolution of Mughal architecture before visiting Agra.
4. Experience the Spiritual Side of Delhi at Bangla Sahib Gurudwara
Delhi is home to people from many religions and communities, and one of the most memorable places to experience this diversity is Gurudwara Bangla Sahib. The beautiful golden dome and sacred pool make it visually impressive, but what makes the experience special is the atmosphere.
One of the most meaningful experiences here is witnessing or participating in the langar, the community kitchen where free meals are prepared and served to everyone. It is a wonderful example of equality, community and service.
5. Discover Qutub Minar
The magnificent Qutub Minar is one of Delhi's most recognisable landmarks. Standing approximately 73 metres tall, the minaret forms part of a larger archaeological complex containing several fascinating monuments and ruins.
Take time to explore the surrounding complex and look closely at the architectural details, inscriptions and stonework.
6. Visit Swaminarayan Akshardham
Start your day at Akshardham Temple, one of Delhi's most impressive cultural landmarks. The enormous complex showcases India's architectural and spiritual traditions through beautifully carved stonework, gardens and cultural exhibitions.
The main temple is covered with incredibly detailed carvings, while the cultural exhibitions introduce visitors to India's heritage, traditions and values. Depending on the day and schedule, you can also experience the cultural boat ride and other presentations within the complex. Allow around 2–3 hours to appreciate the experience rather than simply visiting the temple for photographs.
7. Visit India Gate and New Delhi
No first visit to Delhi is complete without seeing India Gate. Located in the heart of New Delhi, the monument was built as a war memorial and stands along one of the city's grandest avenues.
Combine India Gate with a drive through the wider New Delhi area to see the impressive government buildings and planned avenues designed during the British period.
8. Experience the Lotus Temple
The Lotus Temple is one of Delhi's most distinctive modern landmarks. Its architecture, inspired by the shape of a lotus flower, makes it instantly recognisable.
The temple belongs to the Bahá'í Faith and welcomes people of all religions. Inside, the atmosphere is intentionally quiet and peaceful, making it a striking contrast to the busy streets outside. You don't need to be religious to appreciate the experience.
9. Explore Delhi's Local Art & Crafts
You can explore traditional bazaars, handicrafts, textiles, spices, jewellery, clothing and modern shopping districts. Some of the most interesting shopping experiences happen away from the big shopping malls, where you can see local commerce happening in its traditional form.
For travellers interested in Indian textiles and handicrafts, exploring Delhi's markets with a knowledgeable local can make a huge difference.
10. Experience Delhi Like a Local
This is perhaps my most important recommendation. Delhi isn't a city that can be fully understood by visiting monuments alone. Take a cycle rickshaw through an old neighbourhood. Stop for chai. Visit a local market. Try a traditional snack. Talk to a shopkeeper. Watch people going about their daily lives.
These small moments often become the memories travellers remember long after they have returned home. A local guide can help you see these experiences in a way that isn't always possible when travelling independently.
